Flat shoes are easy to wear but not all of them are comfortable for long walks. Cushioning, arch support and fit matter more than style when you are on your feet.
Ballet flats
Look for a cushioned insole and a snug heel so the shoe does not slip. Very thin soles give little support for long walks.
Loafers and slip-ons
Loafers are structured and smart, which makes them good for work. Slip-ons are quicker and more casual. Check the width: some styles run narrow.
What to compare
- Insole cushioning and arch support.
- Material: leather moulds to the foot over time, synthetic does not.
- Sole grip.
- Sizing comments in reviews.
- Whether half sizes are available.
Breaking them in
Wear new shoes at home first for short periods. Return policies matter for shoes, so check them before ordering.
Getting the fit right
Try shoes in the afternoon, when feet are slightly larger, and wear the socks you will use. There should be a little space in front of the toes and no slipping at the heel.
Break-in and care
New leather shoes may need a few short wears to soften. Rotate pairs so each can dry between days, and use a soft brush to remove dust.
