People sleep warm, cool or somewhere in between, and the right pyjamas can feel quite different from one fabric to another. This guide compares the common options.
Cotton and flannel
Cotton is breathable and easy to wash. Flannel is brushed cotton and feels warmer, which suits cold rooms and winter.
Modal, bamboo and satin
Modal and bamboo-blend fabrics are soft and smooth. Satin or satin-look sets feel silky, though they can feel cooler or slippery depending on the fibre.
What to check
- Fibre content and the care label.
- Whether the cut is loose or fitted.
- Elastic waistbands versus drawstrings.
- Length of sleeves and trousers.
- Size chart, especially if you are between sizes.
Our rule of thumb
If you sleep warm, look for lightweight cotton or modal. If you sleep cold, choose flannel or a brushed fabric. Wash new pyjamas before first use.
Fabric by season
Cotton and modal are breathable in warm months. Flannel and brushed cotton feel warmer in winter. Fleece is cosy but can feel hot, so it suits very cold rooms.
Fit and cut
A relaxed fit allows you to move in your sleep, but very long trousers or wide sleeves can bunch. Check the sizing chart and the length of the leg.
Care tips
Wash according to the label, usually at a moderate temperature. Check seams and buttons now and then, since sleepwear gets washed often.
