A cardigan is one of the easiest ways to add a layer. The right one works over a tee, a dress or a work shirt. These are the points that decide whether you will reach for it often.
Weight of the knit
Lightweight knits suit spring and indoor use. Medium and chunky knits provide more warmth for autumn and winter. If you layer under a coat, thinner is usually better.
Length and shape
A shorter cardigan sits at the hip and works well with high-waisted bottoms. A longer one reaches the thigh or knee and gives a relaxed, flowing look. Button fronts give more control over how open it looks.
What to compare
- Fibre content, such as cotton, acrylic or a wool blend.
- Whether it has pockets.
- Whether it is described as oversized or regular fit.
- Care label: some knits need hand washing.
- Customer comments on pilling, which is common on some fibres.
Care
Fold knits instead of hanging them, so the shoulders do not stretch. Wash following the label and dry flat when recommended.
